Adarsh Gram Jayapur Development : Backward Village becomes a Model Village

On 7th November 2014 Narendra Modi had adopted Jayapur village situated in the Varanasi Parliamentary constituency under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. One year on this village which used to be devoid of basic/fundamental facilities, is ready to greet everyone in the form of a model village.

Jayapur village – A Profile
30% of the inhabitants of this village are farmers, 20% work as farmhands in the fields. 34.1% of the population are engaged in some form of work. Literacy rate in Uttar Pradesh is 53% against the national figure of 73%, but literacy rate in Jayapur stands at 73%. For every 100 males, there are 62 literate females. Jayapur’s male-female sex ratio is much improved than Uttar Pradesh’s male-female sex ratio. Village Head  Durga Devi despite being educated till the 8th standard, takes active participation in promoting cleanliness and also urges the village folk to send their girl child to school.
Here are some information related to the development work in the past 14 Months, along with some pictures to illustrate the same:
o    3 nationalized bank branches have been opened in Jayapur village after being adopted by PM.
o    Daily cleanliness drive ( Sunil Singh and Rahul Singh guide the youth to promote cleanliness on a daily basis)
o    Daily Yoga and Medical camps ( to educate the people about Ayurveda, an Ayurvedic medic Rajkumar has been conducting health camps since 11th March)

o    “Gaushala” construction work completed; primary school powered with the help of solar power; railway reservation centre established; smart classes supported by New Zealand’s CDI have started functioning; as CSR initiative digital classes have been launched in the primary schools
o    Post office has been established including supporting services such as speed post and insurance.
o    400 youth have been registered for the purpose of employment by the handicrafts department. 300 youths received employment via Rojgaar Mela held in February First Week.
o    Life- Insurance Corporation of India office has been established, 16 bio-toilets have been constructed.
o    Forest dwellers’ locality has got a complete make over with model houses being built for 16 forest dwellers’ families. The houses have all the basic modern amenities.
o    In the Dalit locality statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar has been put up. 5 Aaanganvadi Kendra established.


o    Atal Nagar: On Poarch Road, a temple along with a garden nearby has been constructed. Houses with toilets, washing room, kitchen as well as a big room have also been built.
o    Beautification of the school building, along with the introduction of higher education in the girl’s school. 5 fans were installed along with a hand pump in the Primary School.
o    Aadhar card and Jan-Dhan accounts were opened for all the villagers.
o    Women Centre and Skill development centre are soon to be established
o    200 Solar Lights installed. For students a free coaching centre has also been set up.
o    A new tradition- to plant 5 trees on the birth of a girl- has also started. Also, the day of establishment of the village is to be celebrated.

o    A State Bank of India branch is operating in the village. Also, with the opening of a solar powered bank branch by the Union Bank, crop loan worth more than 35 lakh has been approved within 2 weeks.
o    Workshops on organic farming have been organised weekly. (Agri-clinics have been opened to teach the farmers the benefits of organic farming as well as the harmful effects of pesticides to the soil.)
o    100 apple plants of special category presented by the PM have been planted.
o    Addiction –free drives are taken out to promote awareness against various forms of addictions. An Ayurvedic Hospital has also been proposed.
o    Pipeline is being laid to set up the drinking water pump facility; also two plants to make cement bricks have been constructed.
o    For travelers’ convenience, waiting shelters as well as resting places with benches have been set up.


o    For working women travelling up to “Rajatalaab” Bazaar, transport service has taken off. Jyoti, is the first female bus driver from this village along with her friend Varsha, who happens to be the bus conductor. 18 women from the village have been given training to operate bus service between the village and Rajatalaab. Village men also operate bus services.
o     Computerized sub-post office is successfully operational; a post office already existed in the village.
o    Jayapur is the first village in the state to be illuminated completely by solar power. There are 2 solar plant of 25 kilowatt power each.
o    Modern waiting rooms have been set up. A foundation for an overhead tank of 2 lakh litre capacity, a pump as well as the supply pipeline has been laid.

o    After creating a nursery for medicinal plants, preparations are being made for setting up an orchard full of improved varieties of fruits. After planting 200 Aloe vera plants, Tulsi and Kalmegh plants have also been planted.
o     A Rural Knowledge Centre has been set up which not only has a library but also has information available on all issues related to village folk and farmers.
o    A girl’s school along with an air- conditioned “Aanganbaadi centre” for women and children have been set up. (the Aanganbaadi centre has been constructed using earthquake resistant technology, where even if there is no current, provision has been made for proper light and fresh air circulation to continue.)



o    Water availability: in every house a pipeline of 2.5 inch is being constructed that will supply water from the tank present in the village itself. 4 mini tube wells are being set up the boring for 2 of them have been completed. One such tube well will supply water to 150 village households.
o    Toilets are constructed outside every house.
o    two plants of 25 KW capacity (each) are already in function. These two plants are giving free electricity to 720 families of the village. One such power plant provides solar power to 250 houses for 24 hours, free for 25 years.
o    A 3 km road connecting the main entrance of the village to the Dalit colony has been completed.
o    With the help of Carpet Export Promotion Council two weaving centers have been set up, and arrangements for the finished products to reach national and international markets have been made.
o    Visitors to the model village Jayapur includes 3 officials from a British Company-First State Investment, few students from Italy and a 10 member group including doctors , engineers and industrialists.


o    A group of American journalists have visited Jayapur village to study the development work and life style of the village. Also officials from a motorbike company have visited the village.
o     BHU and Kashi Vidyapeeth students have contributed in opening up an e library encouraging womenfolk of the village to utilise computer facilities. A free computer training centre under National Digital Literacy Mission has also been inaugurated.
o    With the help of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana 70% of the village youth will be provided employment by the Ministry of Rural Development.
o    To empower women, and to make them self-sufficient, a tailoring training center (free) has been opened. Presently, 2 batches are being trained, comprising 30 women. The centre will be expanded soon to include more trainees.



o    About 810 families of PM Narendra Modi’s adopted village – Jayapur – in Varanasi will get electricity free of cost. PM Modi’s adopted village is all set to become India’s first Green Solar Energy village as Welspun Energy Limited is providing free solar energy panels to all the houses of the village.
o    Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s adopted village ‘Jayapur’ in his Varanasi parliamentary constituency is now a Wi-Fi Hotspot. Free wi-fi services started in Jayapur village — Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Uttar Pradesh (East) Circle chief general manager (CGM) H R Shukla
o    LED Bulb distribution in 645 homes of Jayapur.
